Cricket for Votes, Politics-Cricket Nexus Continues Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Reporter

Rating 5.0/5 (1 vote)

Politicians in India never fail to cash in on any opportunity to earn themselves a few votes and this time it is gully cricket that they hope will fetch them a few votes! Reportedly in Daman-Diu, both the BJP and the Congress are sponsoring gully cricket for several communities in the area ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. In another bizarre case rather like the IPL-ICL imbroglio, there is now a situation where there are rival T20 cricket leagues formed in Maharashtra with one however now being termed as a ‘rebel’ league with threats that it will be banned in the same was that the ICL was.

The IPL-ICL standoff seems likely to be replicated at the state level in Maharashtra with The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) having announced a the Maharashtra Premier League (MPL) T20 cricket tournament, which is supported by Sakaal Media Group, and is due to start in May. However the latest cricket news has it that the MPL will have a rival in the Lokmat Group's Lokmat Maharashtra Cricket Championship (LMCC) T20 tournament, scheduled for November in Pune. Reportedly Ranji trophy players, other local players and players from other states will be auctioned in a manner similar to the IPL for these leagues as well, which are cash rich and expected to make their franchises quite a lot of money.

And as the ICL players have been banned by the BCCI, so it expected that the Maharashtra Cricket Association will ban the LMCC players. As the IPL and ICL have their political affiliations so, have these two leagues in Maharashtra and it seems that similar politics will be played with cricket player in this instance as well.

It seems there is no end to the cricket – politics nexus in India. Politicians will use every means at their disposal to woo voters, whether it is films or cricket and now it seems that politicians in Daman and Diu have decided that it is gully cricket that will further their agendas and get them the votes of the people. Both rival parties, the congress as well as the BJP are organizing gully cricket matches with the idea that these will help the politicians get in touch with the youth of the area and also enable recruitment to the youth wings of the parties.

The picturesque Daman and Dui constituency has a preponderance of youth among the electorate and it is the aim of the parties to motivate this demographic of their constituency and matches are being organized by the political parties for several different communities such as the  Mitna, Mangalas, Bhandari Patels, and Koli Patels. Meanwhile the youth of the area are not complaining, votes for cricket seems to be an equitable exchange!
