In the melee of history being created by India defeating New Zealand after more than forty years, one personal front was conquered by the Indian Captain as well. Dhoni has surpassed the record of Syed Kirmani, of having claimed maximum victims in an innings. Kirmani had pocketed 6 victims in an innings, and now Dhoni has broken his record by claiming seven victims in an innings. Would now Kirmani change his views about Dhoni's ability as a wicketkeeper? For Kirmani, Dhoni has never been a wicketkeeper as per the definitions of the cannons enshrined in art of wicket keeping. He is of the view that Dhoni is more of an amateur wicketkeeper. Kirmani's main opposition to accepting Dhoni as a wicket keeper is in the stance that he adapts at the time a bowler delivers the bowl. Kirmani is of the view that a wicketkeeper should be in a crouched stance at the time of delivery of the bowl by a bowler and should get up only after the bowl has been delivered by the bowler. Dhoni does not have this stance, and therefore Kirmani feels that he is not the perfect wicketkeeper. But the moot point is whether the stance as it was practiced by Kirmani also needs to be adapted by Dhoni so that he could become a world class wicketkeeper. If he is able to break the record of Kirmani then indeed the stance does not matter at all. What matters in the wicket keeping then and the ability to sight the bowl and do the needful based on the merits of the ball. During the current tour of India to New Zealand, Harbhajan Singh has emerged as one of the most successful bowlers, and his success is majorly owing to the job done by Dhoni with his gloves. Dhoni has successfully been able to keep against the spin of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh and the manner in which he has kept against Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma should clear all the cobwebs about the standards of keeping that he has. The difference between him and other wicket keepers was apparent when he did not play in the second test match between India and New Zealand and Dinesh Kartik was doing the wicket keeping.
