In a bid to raise £250,000 for Lord's Taverners and the Himalayan Trust UK, team Hillary and team Tenzing will take on each other in a T20 match at the Gorak Shep plateau base camp of Mount Everest. The players of the two teams that consist of doctors, lawyers and city workers will take on one another after months of training to familiarise themselves with the high altitudes and low temperatures. The T20 match will be played on 21st of this month which is the Queen’s birthday.
An artificial pitch will be set up at the elevation of 5000 meters to let the teams Tenzing and Hillary (the first ever men to scale Mt Everest) slug it out in a T20 match that will hopefully raise funds for some worthy causes according to the cricket news. While Lord’s Taverners is a charity that helps underprivileged children or children with physical disabilities to get into cricket or other sports, the Himalayan Trust UK was set up by Sir Edmund Hillary himself to help the Sherpas that assisted him in their first ascent of Everest in 1953. There is however the excitement that this will set a world record for a T20 game played on the highest ever elevation in the world. Also the game is being played for a commendable cause that will raise funds for two worthy charities. In fact it is thought that the event will draw attention to and work for environmental protection and poverty alleviation in the region. The funds raised will work towards redressing the fragile ecological balance of the area and cleaning up the mess that is accumulating on Everest’s slopes. Captain of the England cricket team, Andrew Strauss has also wished the team luck on this brave, some would say foolhardy venture. Further this venture has been hailed as an adventure that celebrates the indomitable human spirit and as one of the members of the team said, is "This is one of the biggest physical challenges that any one of us will have undertaken. We are all just ordinary people, taking that extra step to achieving something extra-ordinary."
