Indian team has reached Sri Lanka to play a test series and a one-day internationals series. There has been a belief that this Sri Lanka tour will be the last tour for Indian Senior players. You can name in the list: Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar.
There are many reasons behind this belief. Indian cricket has shown a revolution in the last 1-2 years. There have been many changes in the Indian cricket. With the commercialization of cricket through IPL and ICL in India has opened the doors for many young talents towards the selection for the national team. Now the selectors have many choices for selection as the young talents are searched even from villages, tehsils, districts etc. Young players in the Indian team are from small cities. To name a few: Virendra Sehwag is from Najabgadh a small area from Delhi, Irfan and Yusuf Pathan are from Baroda, a city from Gujarat, and the captain himself Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also from small town - Ranchi. So the young talent is coming from everywhere. And after the victory in the first International Twenty 20 World Cup, the selectors have decided to stick with the younger players to prepare for the 2011 World Cup. Now the selectors have started ignoring the senior players as they think that they have found future replacements for the senior players. You can say that because of some shocking decisions by the selectors. Despite of excellent one-day form last year, the selectors and captain MS Dhoni have consistently ignored Sourav Ganguly in 2008 ODI team. While Rahul Dravid hasn’t been included in the ODI squad saying that he is not in the best of form. Special talent like VVS Laxman has been ignored throughout his career in ODIs by saying that he is not suited for one-day cricket! Anil Kumble wisely taken retirement from one-day cricket with the reason showing that he wants to play only test cricket. But the other reason behind his retirement is that he also consistently been ignored by the selectors for ODIs. And just imagine about Sachin Tendulkar, probably the best cricketer of all times! Even he had to fight for the place in one-day team! Is this a right way to treat the senior players who have done so much for the Indian Cricket? And for the selectors, are they actually have found the replacements of these players, as Yuvrajs and Rainas and Sehwags are far more inconsistence then the senior players? Accepted that these senior players are around 34-35 years of age. But they still have 2-3 years at least to serve the Indian cricket. They have the fitness level to play 2011 World Cup. It seems that the Indian selectors have decided to finish these legendary careers, which are probably the best amongst the best. The selectors should give then time to play as far as they are capable to serve Indian Cricket and then let them take retirement proudly when they think, “That’s Enough”!
