Ganguly Replaced by McCullum as Kolkata Knight Riders’ Captain Print E-mail
Pitched By Cricket360 Reporter
Friday, 17 April 2009

Rating 3.0/5 (2 votes)

Ever since the Kolkata Knight Riders’ coach and Director of cricket operation of KKR John Buchanan proposed an experiment with multiple captains, the team has been shrouded in controversy. Buchanan seemed keen on trying out an all new strategy of having rotating captaincy to a team.

What followed that initiative were rumours that Sourav Ganguly who is the icon player for the Kolkata Knight Riders has been removed from captaincy. But team owner Shahrukh Khan and the managers insisted that this wasn’t true. But they did not declare any decisions immediately, saying that the captain, the vice-captain and the team composition will be finalised only after the team reaches South Africa, just before the IPL begins on the 19th of April.

Now finally, when Season 2 of the Indian Premier League is just around the corner, KKR’s decision has been declared. And it is a decision that is making heads turn in disbelief. A day after John Buchanan told a press conference that “We are deciding on the leadership issues,” a new captain has been appointed for their opening match against the Deccan Chargers on the 19th of April. Reports have it that New Zealand’s wicket keeper Brendon McCullum will replace Sourav Ganguly as the team captain.

This move comes as a big disappointment to Sourav Ganguly who led the Kolkata Knight Riders through the first season of the IPL. Although they didn’t do very well last year losing 8 of the 14 games they played, Shahrukh and Ganguly’s fans at home had faith in his performance as a team leader. This decision is bound to kick up the dust among his fans, who are already protesting Buchanan’s decision. Ganguly however insists that as a professional, he will give his best to the team at whatever position he is.

On the other hand, McCullum who played only four matches in the first season is slated to be free to play for the whole of the second season of IPL. Last year McCullum gave KKR a blazing start, if he maintains that level of performance this year, he might prove to be an invaluable asset to the team as captain.

I don't think McCullum can match in any way to Ganguly in captaincy.
This will
be clear as the tourney progresses!
