KKR vs. DC: KKR Need to Get on with their Cricket Now Print E-mail

The Kolkata Knight Riders IPL team which will meet the Deccan Chargers today in their first game of IPL Season 2, will now be looking to get on with the business of playing actual cricket. There has been enough cricket controversy about multiple captains, rotating captains etc, etc, now this team,  needs to get down and play some good cricket so that they place somewhat better than last year’s rather ignominious sixth place.

Vijay Mallya, owner of the Bangalore Royal Challengers IPL team that won their inaugural fixture handsomely yesterday was reported in the cricket news as saying that Shah Rukh Khan has every right to experiment with his team. He did however clarify that the multiple captain concept was not for him or his team and he had gone by the suggestion of Brijesh Patel and Ray Jennings when building his team.

On hand today is a big match of teams who did not exactly play to potential last year, the KKR and the Deccan Chargers team. All eyes are on the major change in the KKR team; that it will be led by New Zealander Brendon McCullum as against Sourav Ganguly who let the team last time. It will in fact seem strange to many that the Kolkata team will not be led by their beloved dada, who however has sportingly declared his having no problem with McCullum leading the team. Ganguly said that he would focus on playing well to help his team.

The team appears strong with the presence of West Indian Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum who is at this time in great form. There is also Brad Hodge to count on and if Ganguly is able to hit mid season form, then the team will be off to a rollicking start in this series. Ishant Sharma and Ajantha Mendis will lend teeth to the team in the bowling department and then there is Mashrafe Mortaza whom the KKR team acquired at such a cost this year, who will also make a substantial contribution; hopefully for KKR.

The KKR’s opposing team the Hyderabad team held the last place in IPL’s inaugural segment, which was rather inexplicable seeing the kind of stalwart talent the team has: there is Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs and VVS Laxman. This year they will not have the services of tremendously talented Aussie bad boy Andrew Symonds so there is that problem and although they have R P Singh and Chaminda Vaas in their ranks, the bowling attack still seems rather unconvincing.

Both teams have everything to play for and cricket lovers can hope for a well fought match today when each team tries to outdo the other and make a point in that process.
