Cricket Australia Says No IPL for Shaun Tait Print E-mail

The Rajasthan Royals IPL team will miss the services of Shaun Tait who had been acquired by them for $375,000 in this year’s February auctions of the IPL. Reportedly Cricket Australia does not want to risk Tait’s unavailability for the T20 World Cup in England in June this year. Tait had sustained a hamstring tear injury about 2 months ago and was in rehab for the same. CA has refused to give him a clean bill of health for the IPL though Tait had declared himself fit a couple of weeks ago.

The Rajasthan Royals have one more reason to be glum for after Shane Watson, it is now Shaun Tait who will be unable to play this year’s IPL leaving the champion team further depleted according to the cricket news. All rounder Shane Watson and last year’s big performer Sohail Tanvir are already not a possibility for the Rajasthan Royals team and now Tait’s absence will be a further blow to the Rajasthan team.

Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young was quoted in the cricket news as declaring, "Shaun Tait won't be playing IPL. He's still working through the rehab program and it has been determined that he won't be playing IPL. He has a hamstring injury and there's associated issues behind the hamstring injury."

An Australian publication quoted sources as saying that Tait was close to full fitness after almost two months of a radical treatment involving injections of his own blood into the problem area.

Tait's manager Andrew McRitchie said the CA's decision was "very disappointing" as Tait had been making good progress in rehabilitation. "The IPL was the only chance to prove his fitness before the squad for the Twenty20 World Cup was picked. How he proves that now, I don't know," McRitchie was quoted as saying by the publication.

Last year the IPL was criticised as being rather like the Australian cricket league, dominated as it was by Aussie performances. This year though it does seem likely to be same case since most Aussies seem to be missing from this year’s IPL. Test skipper Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey are both being rested to prepare for the Ashes campaign against England in two months. Andrew Symonds and Brett Lee will also not be playing this year’s IPL. Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson, who had not been part of IPL last year and are not part of IPL this year either.

So it seems to be mainly the retired Aussie players like Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, Matthew Hayden etc who are part of this year’s IPL and it does not seem like the Aussies making as much of an impact this year.
