The ICC has declined the application of the Indian Cricket League for official recognition. The ICL had filed this application last year, which was finally decided by the ICC at their board meeting in Dubai yesterday. The ICC was reported in the cricket news as saying that the status of the players who had joined the ‘rebel’ league would be decided by the individual member cricket boards.
The Indian Cricket League may have had hopes of a favourable decision by the ICC in their favour; for recognition, of “authorized unofficial status”, however their hopes were dashed when the ICC rejected their application. ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said that, after careful consideration by the ICC’s executive board it had been decided to reject the application. The ICL has tried many times in the past to hold talks with the BCCI, the ICC to find a compromise via media to solve the impasse, however each time they have been met with no success. The ICL had expressed frustration at the ICC’s delaying tactics and had even gone so far as to threaten legal action if things were not resolved soon. Now cricket news reports have said that the ICL was planning to approach courts in the UK, where stringent trade laws prevail. "It's absolutely unfair and extremely disappointing. We will now definitely take the legal route for resolution of this issue. We could have done that earlier but were hoping for a fair decision from the ICC," said Kiran More ICL board member. The reason that the ICL’s status is of such crucial importance is due to the cricket players involved. Those cricketers who had joined the ICL were automatically barred from playing international cricket by their respective cricket boards. In the event the careers of literally dozens of talented cricketers is held in limbo currently. The Pakistan international cricket team is one that seems to be suffering the ill effects of this impasse the most, where the PCB first picked three ICL players to the team for the T20 World Cup in England but dropped them the very next day. This position of the ICC on this subject is seen my many as a pandering to the BCCI and the IPL and as of now there seems to be no solution to this problem that faces international cricket and cricketers.
