World Cup 2011 may be two long years away, but the preparations and qualifiers have already begun. While the rest of the world is occupied with the ongoing Indian Premier League matches in South Africa, 12 teams (namely Ireland, Kenya, Canada, Namibia, Netherlands, Oman, Bermuda, Afghanistan, Uganda, UAE, Denmark and Scotland) divided into 2 groups, are battling it out in its backyard for a place in the World Cup. Four top teams from among these will qualify and will join the 10 full-member countries in the cricket World Cup which will be hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Ireland defeated UAE by a whopping 8 wickets on 13th April to ease into the World cup with the highest league standings. A couple of days earlier the team slipped to the second place after Afghanistan’s shock win, but they got back their lead after defeating UAE. Kenya who topped Group B in the preliminary stage came off a bad start with a defeat to Canada. But they recovered by following it up with a 24 run win over Scotland. A loss to Namibia later left their World Cup spot in jeopardy, but they managed to pull a win against Ireland (which had already acquired its place) with 12 balls to spare, to ensure their World Cup berth for the fifth consecutive time. It was an unhappy week for Scotland who Canada with some consistent play managed to make it to the World Cup with a second place in the league qualifier. After them, Netherlands too picked up the final spot among the four qualifying teams with a win against Canada. Afghanistan did well achieving official ODI status after a tense win over Namibia. As for Namibia, winning only two out of the seven matches they played stayed at the bottom of the eight-team table with only 4 points to their credit. It was a turbulent week for Bermuda which was stripped off its ODI status even after a whopping win over Uganda, claiming the number 9 spot. A century stand for the fifth wicket saw Oman’s victory over Denmark thus claiming the 11th place. Denmark ended last with no wins.
