Only a few days ago the Indian Premier League decided to dedicate 2 and half minutes of their 7 and ½ minute time-out to ‘special causes’ wherein Queen Rania of Jordan, well known for her concerns for social reform and progression was slated to screen a series of short films on the importance of education, aimed particularly at African children.
Shortly after this venture was underway, the IPL decided on another move that they believe will actively support a cause: Underprivileged schools and all major cities where the IPL matches are to take place will receive 1,000 tickets per game on a first come first serve basis. The schools may then sell these tickets to their students and members of the school for R20.00. The money that the schools raise from the ticket sale is to be kept and used for whatever the school may need it. And that is not all; the person buying a ticket from the school gets two additional free tickets to the match. This overture has been initiated as part of the DFL IPL’s HEAT project that has dedicated R8- million to scholarship programmes for schools and students. The second part serves as an incentive to the students who attend the matches. Five students will be identified at every match and their faces flashed on the screens. They will then receive R15 000 that will be transferred directly into their school accounts. This move by the IPL is one of the largest community programmes in South Africa by a sports organisation.
