IPL Issues with Pakistan to be Settled Print E-mail

All the turbulence over the security issues in Pakistan and the attacks on Mumbai had a damaging effect on Pakistan cricket, as they were not allowed to feature in the second season of the Indian Premier League. In the aftermath of November's terrorist attacks in Mumbai which sparked deterioration in relations between the neighbours, the players were banned by their own government from playing in the IPL. As a result their contracts were abruptly suspended or terminated, without the issues being settled fully. But things are looking different for now as the monetary and contractual issues, of those players whose contracts were ended, are likely to be settled in the near future.

The representatives of the Pakistan cricketers from Portfolio World - a sports management company appointed by the cricketers themselves - will fly to India for discussions with the IPL bosses. Portfolio World’s chief executive Salman Ahmed confirmed this news to the Daily Times, adding that “Yes we are travelling to India to negotiate with the IPL management and also to talk to our lawyers there.”

After ceasing contracts of players like Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Salman Butt and Shoaib Akhtar who played in the first inaugural season, the IPL owed them $38.5 million. Other players whose contracts were suspended are Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Misbah-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal.

Ahmed said that, on consulting the lawyers regarding this, they were planning to issue a legal notice to the IPL. “The IPL administration is yet to issue termination-suspension letters to our cricketers who were verbally told about the decisions. Our efforts will be to handle this issue in a positive manner.” He also added that the players should have been given a chance to play now that the tournament has been moved outside India to South Africa; he also believes that the Pakistan players were indispensable to their teams, and the teams have begun to feel the weight of their absence.

“We have also received signals that the IPL might get Pakistan players back into its fold because the second edition of the league ongoing in South Africa has fewer colours than the previous one.”
