The Kings XI Punjab have played two matches so far in the DLF IPL 2009 tournament and thanks in part to some forgettable performances and in part to the rain Gods and a couple of gentlemen called Duckworth and Lewis, have lost both. The Bangalore Royal Challengers won their first tie against the title holder Rajasthan Royals team in great style and then proceeded to lose to the Chennai Super Kings as well as the Deccan Chargers. Both will be bringing on their entire wherewithal to try and secure a win here.
Luck wise, things are really not going well for team Punjab. For one the rain Gods are playing spoilsport having truncated both their matches so far and for another the break up between team owners couple Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia has not boded well for the personal lives of its owners. Not that the latter should have any bearing upon the team members and their play. It was reported in the cricket news that Zinta already made it clear to the players via SMS that there is no longer any kind of personal relationship between he and Wadia, only a professional one. The problem confronting the Punjab team is mainly of the bowling department, the batting being well fortified with the likes of Ravi Bopara, Karan Goel, Irfan Pathan, Kumara Sangakkara, DPMD Jayawardene and of course Yuvraj Singh himself. In contrast to the Punjab team, the Bangalore team made an impressive start crushing the Rajasthan Royals; getting them all out in just 58 runs. Thereafter however, they have lost to Chennai as well as Hyderabad. According to skipper Kevin Pietersen, it is the batting that needs attention, “We didn't play too well in the last two matches. I think if we can sort our batting in the first six overs, things would be quite okay," he said. Only Dravid has consistently fired for the Bangalore team, the rest of the batsmen, including Pietersen have failed to be consistent and effective. Pietersen will be looking for a change in fortunes and can perhaps derive some inspiration from Kingsmead, Durban, which used to be his home ground which is where today’s match will be played. Only one match will be played today; from tomorrow there will be double headers the entire weekend for three days running.
