The purists of the game of cricket must be the most perplexed lot. They would not know how to react, till the time test cricket only represented the game of cricket, its frontiers were not expanding. But as the age of instant nirvana in the form of Twenty-20 cricket is expanding, the countries, which used to cock a nook at cricket, seem to be warming up to it. It is probably more to do with the fact that Twenty-20 cricket has become one of the biggest commercial success stories in the recent times, and as a result new converts are getting added to the list.
Spain is the latest convert that has joined the bandwagon. The advent of the instant variety of cricket has also meant that those cricketers of the older generation, who had hung their boots, are finding that they still have a market value. It has happened with Farokh Engineer as well. He has now got an opportunity to coach the Spaniards finer the nuances of the game of cricket so that they can also start participating in the T20 games. Farokh Engineer has got one of the most exciting assignments of his life. He is now donning the mantle of the coach to help Cricket Espana and Madrid Cricket Club soak in the ambience of cricket during ICC centenary year celebrations from April 25 to 27. Farokh Engineer has shown a keen insight about the game, whenever he has been given an opportunity to comment on it. Therefore to impart coaching would be a new addition in his oeuvre. Eight teams from Spain (Madrid Cricket Club, La Manga Cricket Club, Mojacar Cricket Club), the United Kingdom (Bank of England Cricket Club, Belsize Cricket Club, Milton Keynes Cricket Club) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam Cricket Club and The Hague Cricket Club) will be participating in this tournament. These teams are playing for a noble cause and the benefit from the proceeds would be coming to Anantpur, via the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, a Spanish non-governmental organisation working to improve the lives of the people of Anantpur, in Andhra Pradesh district in India. The foundation also plans to set up a cricket academy for more than 1,200 children with disabilities. Farokh Engineer is not going to pocket money from this assignment but proceeds from his coaching sessions, would be given to his charity for homeless children in Mumbai.
