Kolkata vs. Chennai T20 Match Today at Cape Town Print E-mail
Pitched By Sharad with C360 Reporter
Saturday, 25 April 2009

Rating 5.0/5 (1 vote)

The Chennai Super Kings have played three and won just one. The Kolkata Knight Riders team has also played three and won only one. Neither of these teams have performed up to potential so far in the tournament, and both will be looking to add to their points tally today. Today will tell who among the two will succeed.

In their last match against the Rajasthan Royals, KKR lost narrowly by virtue of a super over being called into play after scores timed. The Chennai team also lost their last game narrowly when they fell short of the Delhi Daredevils total by just 9 runs. While a closely fought match is great for the spectators to watch, it can be awful for the winning team who can be assailed by a welter of ‘What ifs’ and doubts.

One worry for the Chennai team would be fact that skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has so far failed to fire. He will be looking forward to rectifying this situation in today’s match. On the other side skipper Brendon McCullum has also failed to fire after replacing Sourav Ganguly as the caption of the Kolkata team. He has contributed just 1, 21 and 3 runs in his three matches so far.

Matthew Hayden has been a great contributor to Chennai’s performances so far (he is their highest run getter with an aggregate of 166 runs from their three matches) however the team was not able to carry on the momentum that he gave to the team as opening batsman. This is something that the middle order batsmen, particularly Dhoni will be looking rectify. Another issue for this team is their bowling during the final overs, when their bowling is not tight enough to curb the flow of runs.

Dhoni admitted as much, when he said about his team’s loss to Delhi, “(The Delhi Daredevils) bowled well at the death and we were nowhere near them with regards to that. I hope our bowlers will pay attention to that. We took some early wickets, but we gave them 20 or 30 runs too many.”

The Kolkata Knight Riders have benefitted from Chris Gayle opening the innings and also with Ganguly’s good form, however Brad Hodge, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Moises Henriques have seemed out of form; not making much of an impact.

Bowling is a bit of an issue for both sides, although the Chennai bowlers Balaji and Gony have performed well enough so far though Andrew Flintoff has failed to be economical. They probably have an edge over KKR in the bowling department who are looking a bit a lack luster with Ishant Sharma and Ajit Agarkar, failing to perform to potential. What will be interesting to watch however will be the wily Muttiah Muralitharan face off against compatriot Ajantha Mendis. Should make for an entertaining Saturday night in!
