Although 2011 is a long way off, preparations for the ICC cricket world cup are already well underway. The last couple of weeks saw the finalizing of the World Cup venue, where Pakistan was dumped as one of the hosts over security concerns. But India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will continue to host the tournament. The tournament organizers decided on Tuesday in Mumbai how the 49 matches will be distributed between the three countries.

13 venues in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will host the 49 matches. Of these 29 matches will be hosted by India in 8 venues, 12 by Sri Lanka in 3 venues and 8 by Bangladesh in 2 venues. The 14 matches originally slated to be hosted by Pakistan have been redistributed with India taking 8, Sri Lanka taking 4 and Bangladesh 2.

In addition, Mumbai was decided as the venue for the grand world cup final. India will also host one of the semifinals and Sri Lanka is to host one. The quarter finals are shared among the three countries, with Bangladesh hosting two. The opening ceremony of the World cup is to be hosted in Bangladesh on February 18, 2011.

The tournament secretariat has also been shifted from Lahore to the BCCI office in Mumbai by the organizing committee. BCCI's chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty replaced Pakistani banker Salman Butt as the event's managing director. The organizing committee is headed by BCCI chief Sharad Pawar and includes Bangladesh Cricket Board senior vice-president Mahbubul Anam, Indian board secretary N Srinivasan, Sri Lanka's Duleep Mendis and Shetty and Haroon Lorgat. Lorgat believes that the special advisor to the ICC, Mr. Inderjit Singh Bindra will play a key role in the management of the ICC cricket World Cup.

The shifting out of the World cup from Pakistan has led to doubts of whether Pakistan will boycott the World Cup in response to what they believe was a very hasty move by the ICC. But the organizers did not give any clear answers on the issue.

Meanwhile, Lorgat insists that security arrangements have been most seriously planned by a special committee. "We are confident of organising a very successful World Cup," he said.
