The BCCI has been quite busy lately, now that the 2011 cricket World Cup has been moved from Lahore to the BCCI office in Mumbai. Less than a week ago the venues in India for the matches were decided: Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Mohali, Kolkata, Delhi and Nagpur. But what are really keeping the committee busy are decisions about upcoming matches and other events that it is in charge of.
For starters, the BCCI has decided to cancel India’s participation in a cricket tri-series that was to take place in Zimbabwe later this year. The purpose of this was to give the Indian team a well deserved break before the ICC Champion’s Trophy in South Africa in September. The tour of Zimbabwe was to happen after the ICC World Twenty20 scheduled for June and India’s ODI series in West Indies. Since the tournament would require 3 countries, the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, in a media communication, did propose South Africa to replace India, but Cricket South Africa declined saying it never intended to participate in the event at all. Srinivasan is quoted saying: "The visit to Zimbabwe was planned but has been dropped now as it was to involve three teams. The Indian cricketers are busy with the IPL as of now. Soon after it’s over, they will head to England for the World Twenty20 from 5th to 21st June. This series is followed by the ODI series in West Indies which will comprise either four or five matches, and then they will participate in the Champion’s Trophy. With such a busy schedule on the line perhaps the decision the skip the Zimbabwe Series was for the better. After their return from the Champion’s Trophy India will host the Champion’s T20 league, followed by a 7 match ODI series against Australia, after which Sri Lanka will visit for a series. In addition, The BCCI has decided to stage an inter-corporate event for 16 teams in September. Meetings with representatives of banks, PSUs and other corporates will be held soon. The matches will be of 50 overs and the winner will receive Rs 1 crore. As for the Arjuna Awards that will be announced soon, the BCCI has recommended Gautam Gambhir and Jhulan Goswami.
