If your reputation is at stake, that too at the beginning of the career, is it prudent to vent out your frustration through the media or keep quite and let your performance speak? Well, the new Pakistan off-spinner decided to vent his grievance through the media and he has been fined with severe financial penalty. It has been learnt that the amount of fine is still not disclosed, but the message has been conveyed that a player cannot express his opinion about a controversy surrounding him through the media.

Pakistan Cricket captain Younis Khan had commented that Australian cricketers have this habit of nagging about the bowlers from the sub-continent who they find difficult to handle. The immediate trigger for this statement was the suspected action of the new Pakistani Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal. During the second one-day international match between Pakistan and Australia in Dubai, it has been learnt that the Pakistani off-spinner was reported for a suspected action by Shane Watson to the on-field umpires. Taking umbrage about this reporting against him, Ajmal decided to comment in media about the action that Shane Watson had taken against him.

International Cricket Council has been quick to pounce on this impetuosity undertaken by Ajmal and has levied heavy undisclosed amount of fine on Ajmal for his action of talking to the media about the incident. The action that has become the bone of contention which earlier the Pakistan captain interpreted in a different way and the bowler himself had tried to set in perspective by talking to the media, but the attempt has gone astray.  Ajmal is on a sticky ground on this count as even the Pakistan Cricket Board does not allow the players to talk to the media.

There indeed is a controversy brewing around “Doosra”, the bowl bowled by Ajmal and which was reported for suspect action. Cricketers in the sub-continent are of the view that it is high time “Doosra” should be given the official recognition as an important arsenal in the quiver of an off-spinner.

The biggest proponent of “Doosra”, in the modern times is the Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh who has used it to deadly effect in the recently concluded India-New Zealand series and has also been using it with effectiveness for his Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians. Among the first practitioners of “Doosra”, was Mutthaiah Muralitharan who has used it to such perfection that he has become the highest wicket taker in the world of cricket. May be the time has now come to give it an official recognition and Board of Cricket Control in India ought to take lead in this regard.
