Less than a week after the BCCI offered ‘amnesty’ to all the Indian players associated with the ICL, as long as they wow not to have any more dealings with the unofficial league, other boards who banned their national players have followed BCCI’s example, and decided to lift the ban on those conditions.
Pakistan who has almost 20 players in the ICL, including Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq, will benefit greatly from this move. On their part, Yousuf and Razzaq have pledged their loyalty to their national team and claimed to have broken ties with the ICL. All the cricketers playing for the ICL found themselves cooling their heels after the ban was enforced. And now worries of their future in the league, especially after the deteriorating India-Pak ties prompted the players to look for a way back into the national team. Yousuf claimed that he has resigned from the IPL and that his priority lies with playing for his country. He is quoted telling cricinfo: "I spoke to Younis [Khan] about a month and a half ago and I resigned from the ICL after that. We both talked about how the country comes first and playing for them is the priority so I decided. However, Yousuf’s intentions are still not perfectly clear. Although he says his contract has ended, the ICL maintains that it’s still intact. Roland Landers, the ICL spokesperson maintains: "We have given him a temporary release so that he can play for his country." As for Razzaq, he says he will resign from the ICL and sign a letter pledging his future to Pakistan. Razzaq told cricinfo: "If the board invites us and says sign a letter to say you will play for Pakistan and leave other leagues, we are ready to do it." What Razzaq was opposed to PCB’s demand for an NOC: "This NOC the board wants has no authority, no value," he said. "The players are ready to play for Pakistan so where is the problem? "When Yousuf left the ICL the first time, did they ask him for any NOC? When a politician changes party, does he take an NOC from his old party? I want to play and am willing to sign a letter saying so," he asserted. Although the board is keen on having the players back, it’s still unclear how and when the road will be open again.
