For quite a while there Adam Gilchrist’s Deccan Chargers had looked unstoppable. Now having lost their last couple of matches the cricket news isn’t all that hot for them. They take on the Chennai Super Kings today who finally seem to have got their act together, having won their last couple of matches. It should be an interesting battle today to see who is able to prevail over the other.
The Deccan Chargers started with a bang this DLF IPL Season 2009, in stark contrast to their abysmal form last year. By contrast last year’s runner up team, the Chennai Super Kings suffered shock defeat after defeat as they began their campaign in this year’s T20 IPL matches. Now both seem to be undergoing a change of form that may be excellent cricket news for Chennai but not for Hyderabad. To be sure this is the second time that the two teams will meet in this season’s IPL, and the result on 27 April was in favour of the Deccan chargers. Gilchrist played a blistering knock against Chennai on that occasion and the flying start (67 runs on the board before 6 overs were done) took the game away from Chennai. Thereafter however Deccan lost to Delhi and to the Rajasthan Royals as well, which is perceived a much weaker outfit than it was last year. For the Deccan Chargers as well, a new replacement has worked well: T Suman replaced an out of form and out of sorts VVS Laxman and acquitted himself well. Gilchrist will weigh his international cricket player option carefully; he has Scott Styris, Ryan Harris, Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Zoysa. As for the Chennai super kings, they probably feel they are on to a good thing and may retain their line up from last time including M Vijay who replaced Parthiv Patel in their last T20 match. Today’s will be the T20 match to watch which will be worth more than just points for the teams; a win will mean a morale booster for further games in the competition.
