It was in offing for quite a long time, i.e. the inclusion of cricket as one of the events in the Asian Games, and finally it would make its debut from the 2010 Asian Games. Of all the places it would debut in China where the 2010 games are going to be held, a country that does not have a tradition of cricket playing. Who knows, by the time the games unfold, China may launch its cricket team as well!

When Cricket would make its debut in the Asian games in 2010, one thing is for sure for the cricket fans of the sub-continent it would be a godsend opportunity to travel to China and see the game as also enjoy the landscape of China. For quite a lot of fence sitters who may be having a reluctance to visit China, cricket may turn out to be the catalyst to visit this country, which is one of the fastest developing countries in the world.

China is hosting the Asian Games from November 12 to 27 in 2010. As many as 45 countries will compete in 42 various sports disciplines during the 16th edition of Asian Games, which will be held Guangzhou, China.

Yuan Yui, who is the Deputy Director Marketing for the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC), informed that cricket would be included in the 2010 Asian Games as a major discipline, besides other new entries like dance sports, dragon boat and roller sports.

China has embarked upon an awareness campaign in its country to create awareness about Cricket. Pakistani officials are also extending the hands of cooperation to make this game a grand success. Pakistan is positioning itself as a partner to facilitate successful launch of cricket in the Asian Games 2010.

For the cricket playing countries in Asia it would be another tournament to fight for, and it would be a tournament that would be played on a venue that has not been affected by any urgency or any other incident that may disturb the peace of the country.

For traditional rivals India and Pakistan it would be another tournament where they would fight amongst themselves for supremacy and the spoilsport could be Sri Lanka. The format has yet to be decided, and in all probability it would either be a one-dayer or a 20-20 tournament. Going by the flavour of the season, and the interest that 20-20 format is generating owing to advent of Indian Premier League; China may become a new convert to this game. History bears a testimony, as China did the same with the game of basketball, and nothing stops it from doing it for cricket as well.
