It might have come a trifle late, but it was a recognition that salutes the genius of the man as one of the best swing bowlers in the world. Sir Richard Hadlee was the first bowler from the Kiwi land that took the status of the New Zealand as a cricketing nation to the exalting heights. As a matter of fact, he is the first player from the Kiwi land who has attained this fame. But one of the distinct features of the players from the New Zealand is their simplicity, and their adaptability to get immersed in common chores, and for them the reputations and citations do not create arrogance but it induces further humility. Sir Richard Hadlee was no exception. As soon as ICC included him in the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, he immediately passed on the plaudits to Sachin Tendulkar.
Had it been any other player, he could have chosen the opportunity to berate the ICC for according the recognition; Sir Richard Hadlee took no time in transferring the spotlight from him to Sachin Tendulkar and called him arguably as "greatest player in the history of the game". He amplified his point further by comparing the achievements of Sachin with Donald Bradman, and argued that while Bradman played only one form of the game i.e. the test cricket, Sachin had played in al the forms of game into which cricket has evolved and had stamped his authority in all of them with equal force. He was profuse in being accorded the honor and opined that it could not get much better than being included in the list of 55 best cricketers of all times in the game of cricket. He expressed the desire that he be remembered as somebody who played hard in a very successful era for New Zealand cricket. He had special word for Ishant Sharma as well, whom he forecasted as someone who would turn out to be very very special for India in the near future.
