While in the Indian Premier League it might be difficult to find players on the wrong side of thirties having a sizeable presence, the experts of the game are of the view that seniors ought to present in the game. A success of the team is defined by the number of senior players it has as they are able to do the mentoring of the young players. The success that the current Indian team has achieved is an ample testimony to this fact and it gets further reinforcement from the examples of Australia, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
It is very difficult to way-lay the seniors from the team under the pretext that cricket has become a game of youthfulness where the seniors do not have much presence. The commentators and observers of the game hold the view that a captain is indeed blessed if he has at his disposal a bunch of seniors. There sheer presence in the team, experts feel, would make the captain confident that a sense of service will be induced and good habits would be instilled. Fully conscious of their responsibilities, Indian seniors like Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan have been putting their backs into their work in New Zealand. Sehwag is mentoring Gambhir, while Zaheer Khan has taken Ishant Sharma in his fold, and Sachin and Dravid have been making success out of other players of the team. These seniors would also have some grievances, but they keep it aside and persevere for the cause of the team, with the tacit understanding that when the team would prosper their grievances would automatically get addressed. May be, Buchanan would be able to imbibe this Indian philosophy and get along with the game of cricket in IPL Season 2.
