Ehsan Mani, former president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) was quoted in the cricket news as saying that the decision to move the World Cup out of Pakistan was ‘ill-conceived and taken in haste’ and that India has a ‘big hand’ in the decision. According to Mani, a security assessment for the world cup was to be made in August, so it should not have been made now in April. Mani is accusing India of isolating Pakistan and mixing politics with cricket.

Pakistan has a terrible record controlling home grown terrorists to that they attack their own people with impunity including a visiting international cricket team from Sri Lanka so that it has it status as host for the World Cup revoked. A scapegoat must of course be found, so one is found and named swiftly as it is not far to seek:  India.

It does not matter that the first reactions from within Pakistani cricket as well as others in international cricket after the attacks on the Sri Lankan cricket team were that now Pakistan was no longer safe enough to hold a prestigious tournament like the World Cup. It does not seem conceivable that the decision came as anything of a surprise to the Pakistan Cricket Board, who had to be expecting something of the nature.

"From what I have heard, seen and spoken to PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) and number of other people, it wasn't on the agenda at all in the meeting, the issue on the agenda was security situation in Pakistan after attacks on the Sri Lankan team. If the intention of the ICC and its members was to move the World Cup 2011 away from Pakistan, it should have been properly discussed, proper concept papers should have gone out so that the PCB could have been prepared,” said Mani.

According to Mani it would have been better had the world cup venue been shifted to Australia and New Zealand. "It would have been logical that all the countries should have got together and swapped the World Cup 2011 with Australia who were due to host the 2015 World Cup as situation in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is not good either,” said Mani. Mani also came up with the novel suggestion that Pakistan should be allowed to host its world cup matches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai!

Sections of Pakistani media try and foist off all their short comings on their neighbour. One Pak publication has accused India of trying to get Pakistan out of international cricket altogether and having “fanatic anti-Pakistan goal(s)”. According to one cricket news item, India has even been accused of ‘rigging’ IPL. It any IPL team wins, it is in order to cater to the political whims and fancies of people. Apparently the South Africans who are paying good money to enjoy the spectacle put up by the IPL are having to “suffer by witnessing the stage managed Indian cricket game”  It would be enough to make anyone angry if the suggestions in the article weren’t so completely preposterous as to be ridiculous! The Pakistani paranoia about India would be funny if it wasn’t just so very sad!

Vick Bari  - Another illconceived article   |2009-05-05 16:54:26
It is very suprising for me when I read articles like these full of nothing but
hatred (Tells a lot about who you are). I just have a couple of comments for
you.
Never name your article in the name of a country when all you are doing is
discussing an individual's comment. Yes, i said Individual because references
without any links or citation are flat out too vague to be given any
consideration such as "Sections of Pakistani media " dont mean anything
but, your illconceived attempt to promote hatred. Name a TV channel, a website
anything that would tell people about the author if he really did his homework,
or is really just another buffoon trying to write something up so he can tell
people of his difference in opinion than that of Mr. Mani's.
