He might seem like any other young bloke waiting for his star to shine in the Indian Cricket circuit but he is very confident of himself. Meet Pragyan Ojha, the 22-year old left-handed spinner from Orissa. Cricket occurred as a chance to him. He was sent off to Hyderabad by his parents as a 13-year old to complete his studies.
Instead, he met coach Vijay Paul and then there was no turning back. Formers spinners Kanwaljit and V. Raju helped in honing his bowling skills. Ojha started his cricketing career by playing for the national U-19 team. He bagged 5 wickets against Railways in the Ranji semi-final match in his debut season. So far, so fine. Everyone knew Ojha had talent but there was a lot to be done to exploit the potential. His transformation started in the 2006-07 season when he played for the Hyderabad Team. Kanwaljit Singh (bowling coach) and Vivek Jaisimha (head coach) believe that the opening game of the season against Maharashtra was the turning point in his career. That was when Ojha realized that he has a responsibility to put his talent to fruit. He finished the season with 29 wickets with an average of 19.89 in only 6 matches! He hit the gym straight to lose the entire puppy fat and acquired the avatar of a lean, fit bowler who was serious about his profession. He started consulting the coach more regularly about his work. His hard work paid off when he scalped 8 wickets against South Africa A that included test players like Hashim Amla, Ashwell Prince, Boeta Dippenaar and Justin Ontong in 2007 in Delhi. With that performance, it became obvious that his selection in the Indian Team was in row, sooner or later. His impressive performance for Hyderabad Deccan Chargers team in the recent IPL tournament fulfilled his ambition. Ojha finally struck his luck when he got the international call-up for the Kitply Cup although he made his debut in the Asia Cup. In the final against Sri Lanka, even though he could not take any wickets, he conceded only 38 runs in 10 overs. He was recently felicitated by the Orissa Cricket Association for being the fourth player of the state to get a ticket to the Indian test Team. Ojha’s entry into the team is welcome by the players and critics alike since his left-handed bowling is expected to add variety to the bowling attack.
