Review of the DLF Indian Premier League between Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders in Kingsmead, Durban on Tuesday evening. KKR lost the match by 9 wickets defending a moderate total of 154 runs. Gautam Gambhir (71) and in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan (42) and David Warner (36) made path easy for Daredevils.
Kolkata Knight Riders faced the worst defeat in IPL Season 2 on Tuesday. KKR thrashed by 9 wickets by Gautam Gambhir led Delhi Daredevils. KKR won the toss and elected to bat first started their inning in a fashion. They scored 40 runs in the first 4 overs. Brendon McCullum, the captain of KKR scored his highest (35—3x6, 1x4) in 29 balls so far. But it was M Van Wyk, a relatively unknown player, who struck 11 boundaries in his 74 (4x11) in 48 balls, to help KKR reach a respective total. Brad Hodge failed this time scored only 10 runs and M. Henriques contributed 30 not out to his credit. In their allotted 20 overs KKR totaled 154/3. Pradeep Sangwan took 2 and Ashish Nehra picked one wicket for Daredevils. In response Daredevils began their run hunt rather passively. May be the absence of Virender Sehwag was the reason. Gambhir and Warner began the run chase on a cautious note and punished Ishant Sharma for 17 runs in the third over. KKR captain McCullum had an embarrassing moment in the seventh over when he could not hold on to an easy chance off Ajit Agarkar to a catch-out chance of Gambhir when the Delhi captain was on 21. Next ball, Warner was out with Moises Henriques taking a well-judged catch. The Australian's 23-ball 36 included five fours and a six. The Daredevils also capitalised on shoddy fielding of KKR and Dilshan was dropped while on 24 in the 16th over. Gambhir and Warner began the run chase on a cautious note and punished Ishant Sharma for 17 runs in the third over. Daredevils needed less than eight runs an over from the last 10 overs but Gambhir and Dilshan ran for 1s and 2s with occasional boundary to raise 100 in the 14th over. Man-of-the-match Gambhir played anchor and shunned his usual aggressiveness but at the same time effective for the situation. He was at first content with giving more strike to his aggressive opening partner Warner and did the same in company of Dilshan later on. Ultimately, Daredevils reached their target in 19 overs losing the wicket of David Warner only.
