It has decided to take the bull by horn, and nip in bud its growth. Just a week after an announcement was made that a new American Premier League is set to make its debut in USA, which would feature players from Pakistan and other international players; International Cricket Council has decided to spin off a new T20 competition in USA. The APL is being promoted by the American Sports and Entertainment. It is set to make its debut in October 2009. The biggest stumbling block of the APL is that it does not have an endorsement from the ICC, and therefore is another rebel league, just like the Indian Cricket League promoted by Subhash Chandra of Zee TV.
Though ICC had decided in the case of the ICL that it would not interfere in its state of affairs, seeing the commercial success that IPL has become, and also sensing that more such clones would emerge around the world who may like to bath in the reflected glory, it has decided to be one step ahead of any such new ventures. When it was known that a new ACL is being planned in the USA, ICC has decided that it would promote an alternate league in the USA itself as a competition against ACL, and as it would have a backing from the ICC, it would have definite potential of a larger commercial success. Expounding on this new thought process, Principal Advisor to the ICC, Inderjit Bindra holds the view that regulation has a limitation of not encouraging ventures of the likes of IPL making their debut around the globe. TO set the ball rolling in this regard Bindra has decided to initiate discussion with USA Cricket Association officials during a meeting in Dubai this month to facilitate the creation of an American professional league. In a related development ahead of the launch of the ACL it has been learnt that the USA President Barrack Obama has also developed a liking for the game of cricket after he read a book Netherland, by Joseph O'Neill. This new work explores the cricketing subculture of New York, as well as a tragic friendship with a Trinidadian immigrant. Would the launch of T20 variety of cricket have an endorsement from the office of US President? Watch out this space.
