Review of the third day’s play of the 1st Test match between England and West Indies at Lords Cricket Ground, London. WI lost the match by 10 wickets.

West Indians suffered one of the most humiliating defeat when England trashed them by 10 wickets at Lords Cricket Ground on Friday, 08.05.2009. England is up1-0 in two test match series.

After bundled out for only on 152 runs in the first innings the West Indians surrendered again. Barring Brandon Nash (81) and Denesh Ramdin (61) no other player of the WI took the game seriously.

West Indies resumed their second innings on 39-2, having been forced to follow on. Rain delayed the start by an hour. Devon Smith and Lendl Simmons appeared to have weathered any inconvenience caused by the seaming ball. They even seemed to be applying themselves like Test batsmen, until Simmons flicked Graham Onions to Alastair Cook at square-leg.

One time they lost there 5 wickets when only 79 runs on the board. Spectators were of the view that West Indians would not survive till tea time. But Brandon Nash and Denesh Ramdin put some brave resistance. WI was 222 for 6 at tea.

Starting the day’s play Devon Smith and Lendl Simmons took the score to 70 when first inning’s hero Onions despatched Simmons back to the pavilion. Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Devon Smith also followed the foot-steps and back in the pavilion scoring 4 and 41 respectively.

England’s pacemen laboured while Brendan Nash and Denesh Ramdin dominated with a stand of 143. But despite this sixth wicket partnership between Brendon Nash (81) and Denesh Ramdin (61), the West Indians were bowled out for just 256. But their valiant efforts saved WI from a certain looking Inning’s defeat.

Swann took Jerome Taylor, lbw after missing a wild swish, as well as Sulieman Benn, bowled by a quicker one that crept through the big man’s defence, to give him match figures of 6 for 55. Stuart Broad also took three wickets for England, while Jimmy Anderson and Graham Onions took two apiece.

Needing just 32 runs for victory after dismissing the West Indies for 256, England wrapped up the match after 6.1 overs within three days. It is the first time England have won the first match of a test series since 2005, and need just a draw from the next test at Durham to regain the Frank Worrell Trophy.
