The Central Organising Committee (COC) for the ICC Cricket World Cup (ICC CWC) 2011 met in Mumbai and decided on several key issues about venues and schedules for the World cup. Now that Pakistan is out of the reckoning for hosting the ICC World Cup, the matches that were to be originally hosted there have been redistributed among the other three hosts of the world cup; viz., India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

In the first meeting of the Central organising committee of the World cup since it was decided that given the current security situation in Pakistan, it would not be a suitable or safe venue for acting as World cup host, several key decisions were taken.

According to the cricket news of the meeting of the 49 matches due to take place in the tournament, 29 will be played in India, 12 in Sri Lanka and 8 in Bangladesh. The 14 matches originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan have been redistributed thus: Indian will host eight of the matches; Sri Lanka will host 4, and Bangladesh 2 of the ODI matches.

When Pakistan was one of the hosts it had been decided that there would be a total of 15 venues where the ODI matches would be held, whereas now there will be a total of 13 venues; 8 in India, 3 in Sri Lanka, and 2 in Bangladesh.

Decisions were also taken as regards where the quarter final, semi final and final matches would be held. Two quarter finals will be in Bangladesh, and one each will be in India and Sri Lanka. Earlier one of the quarter finals would have been held in Pakistan which quarter final match will now be held in Bangladesh. Of the two semi finals one each will be in India and Sri Lanka.

The policy decision was taken that should any of the host countries qualify for the quarters or the semi finals an attempt will be made to see that the teams played in their respective home countries. What was also decided was that the World cup secretariat that was to be in Pakistan would now be in Mumbai. The tournament director was named; it will be Prof Ratnakar Shetty.

Reportedly decision was taken to form security directorate under the chairmanship of Board of Control for Cricket in India President Shashank Manohar and a venue inspection sub-committee was formed under the leadership of N Srinivasan.

Earlier, many in Pakistan cricket had been angered at the fact that the world cup matches were taken away from Pakistan. It was argued that this was done in haste and that shifting the matches from Pakistan was “ill conceived”. It was argued that the decision about security was to have been taken in August and should not have been taken so hurriedly at this stage.
