The Deccan Chargers take on the Kings XI Punjab for the first time in the DLF IPL 2009 today at Kimberly. Deccan Chargers have won 5 of their 8 matches having totted up 10 points for themselves so far. On the other hand the Kings XI Punjab have 4 wins and 8 points from their 9 matches. The Deccan Chargers probably have the edge over Punjab since they won their last match while Punjab have lost their last two ties.
Deccan Chargers has had some mixed fortunes in the DLF IPL 2009 so far: they won their first four matches then their winning march was halted by the Delhi Daredevils and they lost three in a row. Then they picked themselves up and won their last tie against Mumbai which could have brought back their winning momentum. "We didn't play a really good game of cricket, but we still managed to fight and show character and come through with a win. So that is what is important. It gives us the momentum again to keep going forward," skipper Adam Gilchrist was quoted as having said in the cricket news. There may be something of an embarrassment of riches for the Chargers today as international cricket star Andrew Symonds will be returning to the Deccan Chargers fold so it will be a question of who to pick and more importantly whom to leave out. Since the departure of Ravi Bopara, the Punjab team’s batting seems somewhat depleted. In their outing against the Rajasthan Royals the top four batsmen managed to make only 22 runs between them and only Yuvraj Singh reached anywhere near a decent personal score. In their last match, which they lost against the Chennai Super Kings, however the performance was much better with Simon Katich, Yuvraj as well as DPMD Jayawardene reaching good scores. They managed to score at nearly 10 an over, however fell short of the huge Chennai total of 185 in 18 overs. What was encouraging was that they lost by only 11 runs. Kings XI have to win today’s match if they are to remain in the contention for the semi final spot, and if they pull up their socks and play to potential they can make it there.
