After Greg Chappell left, the cricket board of India staged a hunt for a coach for Indian Cricket Team. It seemed few dared to step in the controversial shoe of Chapell and finally it was the 40-year-old Kristen who gave his nod for the role. So with Gary Kirsten continues BCCI’s tradition of appointing foreign coach despite the fact the ‘deshi’ coaches such as Lalchand Rajput or Chandu Borde proved to be pretty good coach for the Indian Cricket Team. Now the question that haunts the serious followers of cricket is: is Kirsten’s coaching making any considerable value addition for Indian Cricket Team in forthcoming series? Team India’s performance in the cricket series in Australia has been quite satisfactory. But then Kirsten just took over and his contributions were minimal. Now was the turn of South Africa tour that was concluded in a 1-1 draw; no extra ordinary result by any means. In general, the series was marked by the absence of special planning or strategy and the blame goes to none other than the coach. After that came India’s debacle against Sri Lanka; India’s loosing of 6 wickets for 13 and giving in the terror called Mendis was simply viewed as the result of lack of proper home work. And when a cricket team lands on the pitch unprepared, the blame goes more to its coach than the team members. After all what the coach is paid for by the cricket board? It is easy to predict that a typical Asian pitch will work in the favor of a spinner and Indian Cricket Team could have fared better against Mendis had they prepared themselves for his spinning assault. Kirsten seems to stress on a younger line up for the Indian batting and even with so many young blood in the cricket team, India has been making a miserable fielding display. So far as the ODIs are concerned---right from the SA days and through Asia Cup---India has definitely lost its ranking in international cricket. A close analysis shows that India is lacking in fighting spirit; in the middle of the crisis they just appear to be a clueless lot. While the Team India boasts of some of the finest cricketers in the world, this drop in the quality can be attributed to the psychological barrier between the players and their foreign coach. It is high time that our cricket board seriously start thinking about doing away with their obsession for foreign coaches.
