When Rajasthan Royals met Deccan Chargers in the first instance in the DLF IPL 2009, Australian Shane Warne got the better of the other Australian captain in the IPL, Adam Gilchrist. It was in fact the Royals that were able to halt the Chargers’ headlong winning spree with that win on 2nd May. Till then DC won all their matches; 4 in a row. As things stand now, the Rajasthan Royals are one point ahead of the Deccan Chargers and one place ahead of them on the points table, at number three, whereas DC are at number 4.
The two doughty Aussies will take on one another at Kimberly today when the Rajasthan Royals look to repeat their performance of 2 May when they beat the Deccan Chargers at Port Elizabeth. Both teams lost their last matches against the Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab respectively and will be looking to set the record straight at Kimberly today. One major change in the Hyderabad team today over the last time that the two teams met, is the departure of Fidel Edwards and the arrival of Andrew Symonds. Immediately upon arrival, Symonds showed what he was made off as he smashed 60 off 36 balls against the Chennai team. His presence could give the Deccan team a slight edge over the Jaipur team as far as batting is concerned, though Graeme Smith’s returning form and Naman Ojha being in good nick are happy tidings for the Jaipur team. Perhaps in the bowling department the Royals have a slight edge over the Chargers. Though the captain denies that the bowling attack is lacking in any way, there are fewer international cricket names among the bowlers than in the Jaipur team. What will make for a very exciting contest today will be the rivalry between to compatriots facing off against each other. While one is the skipper of the team defending the DLF IPL champions’ title, the other is the man who turned about the fortune of a team that was at the bottom of the heap last year and which performed so well this year that it remained in the lead for a considerable amount of time. The two Australians, both retired from international cricket are busy showing everyone how the game is played and even more important how to lead a winning side!
