ICC to Discuss the Future of test Cricket Print E-mail

With cricket as a sport going through so many changes, test cricket too has suddenly found itself on the threshold of change. A group of leading administrators from the ICC will gather at Lords in a two day meeting to discuss future changes to the ‘purest’ form of cricket. The main topics to be brought under discussion are the issue of the controversial umpiring referral system and the introduction of day-night test matches.

In the meeting that is to begin today, ICC’s cricket committee will decide whether the referral system is here to stay for good. There have constant trials on the system in four test series’ in the past nine months. It was a decision that allowed players to question the decision of an on-field umpire and appeal to the third umpire for a re-decision using replays. It is for the first time that players could challenge the decisions that they believed were wrong.

The committee will decide on three grounds whether it is fair to make the referral system permanent: whether the system actually helps reverse wrong decisions, whether it undermines the control and authority of an on-field umpire, whether it is fair on the players’ part to ask for a referral and whether the system and whether it unnecessarily extends the time of play. Any decision that is to be taken will be taken only after each of these considerations is duly examined.

In addition, another concern that is plaguing the ICC is the drop of interest levels in test cricket since the foray of Twenty20 cricket. As a result, the committee is considering introducing day-night matches for test cricket. If the move is agreed to, the first day-night test will be played early next year. The committee believes that this will improve audience turnout because many will be able to attend after work hours. This further leads to questions of the color of the ball and of the uniforms. While day-night ODI matches were introduced almost 30 years ago, tests were always played during the day. In addition there will be new regulations concerning bad lights and over rates.

All the decisions taken at the meeting will be announced on Tuesday.
