South Africa crushed England in the second test match at Headingley by ten wickets on the fourth day of the game. The match seemed to steer the Protean way at the end of the third day. The South Africans were in high spirits much before the match began thanks to the last test match they “rescued” from an almost evident loss.
Their only concern was Neil McKenzie’s groin injury. England skipper Michael Vaughan seemed reassured with Andrew Flintoff’s return to the test circuit after a long hiatus and a lot is being expected out of him. The first day had a sad start for England. They had two disastrous decisions spelling the doom for them. One, selecting Darren Pattinson who could only muster up 8 runs and a measly 2 for 95 (on the second day). Two, sending Tim Ambrose to bat at number 6 which is conventionally Flintoff’s position. England stuttered at 203 for all with Pietersen as the top scorer with 45. South Africa concluded the day replying with 101-3. The second day saw some scintillating performances off the bat. Hashim Amla fell quickly after the play started to Pattinson as his first test wicket. Ashwell Prince posted a brilliant 134* and AB de Villiers gave him strong support with his 70*. The day’s game closed at 322-4 securing a lead of 119. The third day saw South Africa finishing their innings at 522. Ashwell Prince’s splendid 149 and 174 by de Villiers torpedoed South Africa to the mammoth score. De Villiers was particularly pleased with his performance and remarked it as his most disciplined innings. He was harshly booed by the spectators when he claimed a catch on the first day of the test which replays showed as dropped. England tottered at 50-2 at the end of the third day trailing by 269 runs. They needed to bat another five sessions to make South Africa bat but could manage only three. Andrew Flintoff and Tim Ambrose showed some promise but were quickly sent back for 36 and 38 respectively. Stuart Broad came and lightened some hopes with his blazing 61 with Pattinson for the last wicket before Pattinson was bowled out and the innings were wrapped up. South Africa then took just 1.1 overs to achieve the dirt target of 8. Ashwell Prince was declared the man of the match. The series is now 1-0 in favor of South Africa and the Proteas have just the right confidence and high to make it 2-0.
