Batsmen Having to Work Hard for Their Runs in DLF IPL 2009 Print E-mail
Pitched By Sharad with C360 Reporter
Wednesday, 13 May 2009

Rating 4.0/5 (3 votes)

The highest run getter by far in the DLF IPL 2009 as tabulated until match 40 is a man who just quit international cricket, Matthew Hayden of the Chennai Super kings with 426 runs and a close to 50 average. There has been just the one century scored so far in the tournament; that is by A B de Villiers. As for the number of sixes in the tournament so far, it is again the big Aussie, Hayden with 17 big hits followed by another retired Aussie, Adam Gilchrist with 16 sixes.

THE TOP SCORERS

The top scorers this DLF IPL after Hayden are Suresh Raina (Chennai) with 309 runs, Jean-Paul Duminy (Mumbai) with 297 runs, Yuvraj Singh (Mohali) with 284 runs, AB de Villiers (Delhi) with 271 runs, Adam Gilchrist (Hyderabad) with 265 runs. This year, the IPL has seen only one century so far, the 105 not out which was by A B de Villiers against the Chennai super kings. Raina is the only other batsman who came close, with his 98 against the Rajasthan Royals.

The top scorers for their respective teams also have not very high scores, ranging from 68 (Sachin Tendulkar is the highest scorer for Mumbai), to 105 runs (de Villiers for Delhi). This again reinforces the premise that runs are not as easy to come by even for the seasoned pros in IPL 2009.

BOUNDARIES / SIXES

Now T20 is a game that is all about the big shots and the boundaries. Kolkata batsman M van Wyk hit the highest number of boundaries, 11 in a match against the Delhi Daredevils, while Brad Hodge (Punjab) and Raina (Chennai) have hit 10 each in one innings.  As for the sixes, three players have hit 6 sixes each in one innings; they are A B de Villiers, Yusuf Pathan and Hayden. 6 other batsmen have hit 5 in an innings.

As for the total number of sixes in the tournament so far, it is again Hayden that leads the pack with his 17 sixes and Gilchrist with 16. They are followed by Raina, Yuvraj and Dwayne Smith with 15 sixes each. The same three batsmen are at the top of the most boundaries table; Hayden has hit 49 boundaries, Gilchrist 28 and Raina 26.

HIGHEST PARTNERSHIPS

Naman Ojha and Graeme Smith of the Rajasthan Royals have had the highest partnership for the first wicket when they played against Kings XI Punjab. There have been two other century partnerships for the first wicket from Mumbai (Tendulkar and Jayasuriya) and Chennai (Parthiv Patel and Hayden) as well. For the second wicket there has been only one century stand, between Robin Uthappa and Jacques Kallis (Bangalore) whereas there have been two for the third wicket; Mumbai (Ajinkya Rahane and JP Duminy) and Chennai (Hayden and M S Dhoni).

* Statistics updated till Match Number 40 of DLF IPL 2009.
