The DLF IPL 2009 has had its share of ducks scored so far in the tournament. There have also been quite a few comedies of errors as misunderstands and communication gaps have led to run-outs. There also been some spectacular and noteworthy all round performances where players have performed as well with the ball as they are impressive with the bat.
DUCKS AND QUACKS The Deccan Chargers have had the dubious distinction of having scored the most number of ducks in one innings, when as many as 4 batsmen were dismissed without troubling the scorers. Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs and V V S Laxman departed without any runs on the board. Later in the innings Pragyan Ojha also departed without making any contribution to the score. The opponent team was Chennai who went on to win the match, by a huge 78 run margin, one of the biggest margins in the tournament so far. On four instances batsmen have been sent packing on the very first ball of the match: Gautam Gambhir (Delhi) was sent off by Chennai, Jacques Kallis (Bangalore) was sent off by Delhi, Brendon McCullum (KKR) was sent off by Bangalore and S Badrinath (Chennai) was sent off by Punjab. RUN-OUTS There have been four instances when there have been 3 run outs in an innings: Chennai’s Manpreet Gony, Joginder Sharma and Lakshmipathy Balaji were all dismissed run out by Delhi. THE ALL ROUNDERS Suresh Raina has displayed the best all round performance in the tournament so far, with his 309 runs and 4 wickets for Chennai Super Kings. Kings XI Punjab skipper Yuvraj Singh comes in next with his effort of 284 runs and his hat-trick of three wickets in three balls. Brad Hodge of KKR has scored fewer runs, 240 but taken 6 wickets in his all round performance. Rohit Sharma of Deccan Chargers has made 210 runs and taken 4 wickets. The all rounder with the most wickets is Irfan Pathan, with 11 wickets in his 10 matches, having contributed 144 runs. There have been instances of the same player opening the batting as well as the bowling for his team. Praveen Kumar of the Royal Challengers Bangalore opened the innings for his team against Chennai Super Kings with the bat as well as the ball. Similarly, Jacques Kallis of Royal Challengers Bangalore did the same for his team against the Mumbai Indians. Certainly cricket is a game about really interesting statistics and the tournament is not even over yet, so stay tuned for some more to come your way, right here on Cricket360.com. * Statistics updated till Match Number 40 of DLF IPL 2009.
