If there is one batsman who has performed consistently throughout the DLF IPL 2009 even when the rest of his team has struggled to find form and get the wins, it has been Matthew Hayden of the Chennai Super King. He is far and away the highest runs scorer in the tournament so far. He has made an outstanding 426 runs from nine matches averaging 47.33 at a strike rate of over 150 which is staggering in its consistency.
Many people have been wondering if Matthew Hayden made a right decision when he quit international cricket in January 2009. It would seem that the rest of three months of rest after quitting international cricket has done him a power of good because right now there seems to be no stopping him. In fact according to Hayden himself quitting gave him peace of mind which has done wonders for him. "The only reason that I'm playing the way I am now is because I have retired. I have been able to let go of the fact that I don't want to play international cricket. I know that I've only got a very short time playing cricket in this particular period, so I've got all my mind, skills and fitness towards the IPL,” Hayden was quoted as having said in the cricket news. So far not one has come even close to the number of runs he has scored, in a tournament which has not been dominated by batsmen the way the last IPL was. He has proved a real asset for the team this year in contrast with last year when he was able to play only a few IPL T20 matches before he was called away for Aussie national duty. This year however it does not seem likely that anyone will be able to wrest that coveted cap away from the burly Aussie. No bowler so far has been safe from Hayden’s brutal assaults in the DLF IPL 2009. If there is one batsman guaranteed to literally send a bowler’s figures for a six, it is Matthew Hayden. In a recent interview in the cricket news, Kings XI Punjab player Irfan Pathan was asked which was the one bowler to watch out for most in the tournament. He replied that whereas any batsman had the potential to be a match winner, it was Matthew Hayden that he would have a “big fight with.”
