For the Delhi Daredevils, all the hard work and fine selection of players and combinations has paid off, and they have eased their way into the semi finals of the second season of the Indian Premier League with only two losses from the 10 matches they have played so far. Last year too they managed to get as far as the semifinals; ultimately losing badly to the Rajasthan Royals by 105 runs; and it was only poor batting that cost them an encounter in the finals.
This year their batting has been smooth, nearly flawless, and so far they stand as favourites to with the cup. However, Sunil Gavaskar still believes that “it’s that aspect of the game that they need to look at more than anything else.” He wrote in the TOI, “The feeling that it’s only a 20-over game and one has to start hitting the ball from the first ball one faces, maybe partially correct if a batsman comes in to bat in the final overs, but to try and do it when there is some bounce and movement is asking for trouble. “The best of batsmen will flounder if they attempt that and those who are succeeding are those who are beginning their innings with proper cricketing shots and then looking to go the aerial route once they have been at the crease for some time.” Meanwhile, Punjab Kings XI need to pull up their socks immediately. The consequence of all the games that they so complacently lost is beginning to show now, putting them in a situation where they must win every game they play if they hope to qualify for the semifinals. According to Gavaskar, the shifting feet of their batting order is what cost them all those matches: “They have experimented a bit with their opening pair and that hasn’t worked and Yuvraj Singh, the skipper and probably the most destructive batsman in this format of the game must come up the order and bat more overs than he is doing. This is the one way that the Kings XI will have a healthy total on board. Tampering too much with the batting order can have a detrimental effect on the team as also changing the bowling order. Some moves are supposed to surprise the opposition, but it doesn’t work always so a new strategy has to be in place.” The Kings XI are no short of talent. Perhaps with a little integrity and focus, they might make it to the top.
