S Dhoni , hardly does any credit to his recently acquired title of ‘Sports Gem’ - the country's highest honor for a sportsperson awarded to him for leading India to the Twenty20 World Cup triumph. It is not very long ago that this rustic lad from Ranchi caught the imagination of the entire nation and lit a candle of hope in the heart of millions of aspirants to name and fame. He set ablaze the live scoreboards and the annals of cricket resounded with his on field exploits while cricket portals swore by the demi-God of Indian cricket. Cricket coverage was barren without mention of MSD and television channels breathed down his neck to bring the most meager bit of news about the cricketing hero the nation had come to love. No cricket update was ever complete without mention of MSD. He ruled the domestic cricket scene as well as the international cricket scene with his scintillating style and amazing scores.
Cricket 360 reports that our Khel Ratna was recently seen in a Reality Show- Chak de Bachche along with Yuvraj Singh demonstrating his performing skills on the Idiot Box rather than on the cricket field. Dhoni’s own remark to the winning children belies his actions viz a viz cricket. “It is fantastic to see children from smaller towns getting such a good platform to showcase their talents. I’m over happy to see Deepak and Nishtha [winners], live up to the high expectations of all the people supporting them, giving them hope to fulfill their own dreams”.
This country of cricket lovers stands betrayed when their real life hero prefers to appear in music videos, ham in commercials and sign new deals every day. That’s not all. This self confessed tired and burnt out cricketer has the energy to match his skills and courage with the Indian Air Force in Jaisalmer by riding a Ducati 1098S against a MIG 27 on a 3-km long runway, in an event organized by NDTV on ‘Jai Jawan’ on August 15. Moreover, when the announcement of the title of Khel Ratna being conferred on him came, M S Dhoni was visiting his home town but he overrode celebrations organized by his alma mater to rub shoulders and play carom with the local ministers and also to test drive the Mahindra Scorpio mHawk (2.2 VVT engine) for a city showroom. It is reported that MSD is earnestly checking out the canine variety to fuss over? Is the latest caper from MSD another bow to the trappings of wealth at the cost of cricket?
One would expect that one who was as eloquently eulogized as MSD would be treating cricket as venerable. On the contrary, M.S. Dhoni seems to have put his first love on the back burner and having announced his unavailability for the game and to his country for the just concluded cricket series, has made no bones about the fact that he is available to all and sundry to the exclusion of cricket, the very reason the world has become aware of a certain Mr. M S Dhoni.
