Review of the 3rd day’s play of the 2nd Test match between England and West Indies at Riverside Stadium, Chester-Le-Street.
On day 3 of the second test of the two-match series between England and West Indies the hosts took a firm command at Riverside Stadium, Chester-Le-Street on Saturday, 16.05.2009. After resumed at their overnight (Day 1) score 302 for 2 England declared their innings 569 for 6 and put Windies in distress claiming their 3 wickets giving away only 94 runs. The tourists are still trailing by 475 runs. England is in strong position on Day 3. Cook and Anderson started the Day 3 after complete washout on Day 2. Cook played a brilliant innings and got out for 160. Essex batsmen Cook recorded his maiden Test 150, sharing 84 with Kevin Pietersen who scored 49 runs. At lunch England stood strong at 411 for 4. Matt Prior struck 8 fours in his contribution of 63 and Paul Collingwood hit a 13th Test fifty as England declared at tea on 569-6. Durham all-rounder Collingwood, on his home ground contributed 60 (n.o.) and Stuart Broad was unbeaten on 28. In reply the start of Windies was in no way looked confident. Anderson rattled Windies top order and claimed all the 3 wickets. Anderson’s figures were 11-3-36-3 when bad light forced the play stop before scheduled time. England lead the series 1-0 and the West Indians needed 370 runs on board to avoid the follow on. Thus, England already assured at least a draw and series in their favour.
