In the yesterday’s match between Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings, in the Indian Premier League at South Africa, one banner brought out in distinct relief the niche that the IPL authorities have carved for themselves in South Africa by aligning themselves to promote the cause of education of school children in South Africa. The banner held by a school boy invoked “I also need money for my school”, and it would be one of the first instances in the history of international sports that a tournament has been able to have such a profound impact in the country that children are coming in droves in anticipation that there school may also get a financial aid from the IPL.
The dispension of the new government in India would be mightily pleased with this initiative as the government in waiting has spelt out its intention of focusing on education, and IPL could indeed come forward to help the cause of education in India as well. Indian Premier League has helped quite a lot of schools in South Africa so far. As a matter of fact the number of schools that have been helped would be equivalent to the number of matches that have been played in the IPL in the second season so far, as during each strategic break one or the other school receives the cheque. This event is broadcasted strategically probably with an intention to tell the world that sports of the international kind, which makes so much money, can always take up such a charitable cause in a country where it is organized. The school owing to lack of funds was not able to develop content in Braille language that could help these students pursue the studies. There was also a sense of despair in these students as the education was not able to help them out, and they had developed a complex. Such was the complex among the children who are visually impaired that they did not show an inclination to go home after schools. It may now become a thing of the past. The grant provided by the IPL would help the school purchase a Braille machine and the content for the children can now be developed in a user friendly language. IPL would not have needed a much better cause to be associated with. Now that it has taken this initiative in South Africa, may be same kind of initiative can be expected for Indian schools as well.
