Review of the 4th day’s play of the 2nd Test match between England and West Indies at Riverside Stadium, Chester-Le-Street.

On day 4 of the second test of the two-match series between England and West Indies, the hosts come closer to second consecutive win in Npower series at Riverside Stadium, Chester-Le-Street on Sunday, 17.05.2009.

England players are delighted to have put themselves in a winning position against West Indies—and determined to be ruthless in pursuit of a 2-0 success today. est Indies were fought for survival in the second test against England after being forced to follow on the 4th day.

West Indies were 115 for 3 when bad light forced an early stumps with 14 overs remaining on day 4. They are still 144 runs short of making England bat again to take the Wisden Trophy.

West Indians were most indebted to Ramnaresh Sarwan (100) and Denesh Ramdin (55) and S. Benn (33) in their first innings and captain Chris Gayle (54) in the second after following on.

The West Indies resumed their first innings at the Riverside on 94-3, chasing England's first innings score of 569-6. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Denesh Ramdin did their best to defy England England’s seam and swing bowlers held the upper hand. West Indies were all out for 310 runs in 83.4 overs.

James Anderson’s sixth 5-wicket haul in Tests and Graham Onions—who recovered from giving away 27 runs in three overs, mainly to Gayle, to take his and then Sarwan’s wicket—as the main contributors to England’s success.

Day 4 belonged completely to Anderson, who took a 5 wickets to trigger the West Indian collapse. Sarwan Batting and Captaincy - taking Windies on the Backfoot again!provided some resistance, but it was not enough for West Indies to avoid the follow-on. Gayle started off aggressively in the second innings, but the twin strike by Onions left West Indies in dire straits. They are still trailing by 144 runs with 7 second innings wicket remaining.

S. Chanderpaul (18) and L. Simmons (4) were at the crease when the bails were off for 4th day’s play. It is interesting to see what strategy Windies will adopt to defy a certain looking defeat. England bowling will also put on test when they try to bundle out West Indians as early as possible.
