Kim Hughes, former Australian captain has accused West Indian skipper Chris Gayle of being an embarrassment to the game of international cricket in response to Gayle earlier comment about not minding if test cricket were to become extinct. Gayle prompted Sir Viv Richards former West Indies great to also comment on Gayle’s statement which he said was a total betrayal of the game that raised him.
Chris Gayle may himself have said in the cricket news that he wants to relinquish captaincy of the West Indian test side and apparently many others in international cricket now seem to concur with him who have gone so far as to opine that Gayle should be sacked. Former Aussie greats have apparently taken a dim view of Chris Gayle’s anti test match sentiments that he has expressed so freely in the cricket news of late. If former Aussie skipper Kim Hughes has called Gayle an embarrassment to West Indian cricket, Former Australian Test captains Ian Chappell and Mark Taylor have asked that he be sacked for his comments. Taylor opined that opinion was still very much in favour of test cricket and that even younger players were in favour of test cricket as the ultimate format of the game. He added that the comments such as those made by Gayle made would not help. Tait had agreed with Gayle saying that the latter was ‘spot on’ with his assessment and Clarke quickly riposted by saying that this view was characteristic of a growing “breed of cosmetic cricketers” “That’s Shaun Tait, and that’s why he’s not playing for Australia, because if you’re brutally frank about it, Shaun Tait’s pretty soft,” Hughes was quoted as saying in the cricket news. Earlier Chris Gayle had come out unequivocally in favour of T20 cricket matches over test matches. He said that he for one would not miss test cricket if it were to end. He clarified that he thought test cricket would always be around, but that he was not looking to be part of it for too long. Gayle enjoys T20 cricket and the way that it has impacted the game of international cricket, pointing out that with T20 cricket one had sold out tickets for live matches whereas for tests, it was difficult to get 50% occupancy. The reactions to Gayle’s comments have been swift and almost uniformly disapproving from the international cricket community.
