Monday, May 18th, 2009, Centurion – The Chennai Super Kings have won the toss and elected to bat. M.S Dhoni elected to bat as wants to put up a strong total against the Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR would have to see if they can stop their losing streak. For Kings, Matthew Hayden is not playing today; instead they have brought in George Bailey.
Chennai Kings start the opening partnership with Bailey and Patel. For Knight Riders, Ishant Sharma is not playing today and thus bowling was opened by Ashok Dinda. Anureet Singh shared the new ball along with Dinda. Both Patel and Bailey were scoring runs at ease. Bailey hit Dinda for two consecutive fours in the third over. At the end of five overs, Chennai were 42 for no loss with Patel and Bailey scoring 18 and 20 each. Patel was the first to get out when Bailey turns one of the wide of square leg, there is some hesitation and the throw from Shukla is pretty accurate and Patel is short of the crease. The next batsman to come in is inform Suresh Raina. The second batsman to go was Bailey who also got run out. Suresh Raina turns the ball to the point along with the spin and runs for quick single but Bailey is a bit short. The third umpire rules him out. Dhoni is the next batsman to come in, at the end of 10 overs Chennai Super Kings are 82 for the loss of two wickets. Both Dhoni and Raina kept taking singles and two’s for the next two overs scoring 7 runs off Mendis’ first over. Knight Riders came in to bat with Ganguly and McCullum. McCullum opened loose on Morkel right from the first over hammering Morkel for 2 fours in the first over. McCullum batted keeping the required run-rate of 9 an over in mind hitting Morkel for 16 runs including a six and two fours in the third over. Dhoni brought Muralitharan early on in the spell to further put pressure on the Knight Riders. Murali bowled Ganguly out for 4 in the fourth ball of his first over. At the end of five overs, Knight Riders were 34 for the loss of the wicket of Ganguly. McCullum put some amazing batting display when he hit Tyagi for 22 runs in the sixth over. McCullum took Tyagi to the cleaners when he hit him for 4 fours and a six. At the end of six overs, the required run-rate and current run-rate were both around 9.5 an over. McCullum kept the runs flowing from the other end while Hodge kept on rotating the strike. At the end of the 10 overs, Knight Riders were 83 for the loss of Ganguly’s wicket. McCullum and Hodge kept scoring at an average of 9 runs from the 10th to 14th over when Jakati bowled McCullum for 81. David Hussey was the next batsman to come out, at that stage, the Knight Riders needed 63 runs off of 32 deliveries. In the sixteenth over, Hodge gets the ball wrapped on to his pads while Hussey just takes off and gets himself run out. Another match that is going to go the wire, Knight Riders need 25 runs of the last two overs. Balaji bowls the second last over and gets hit for a huge six over and Knight Riders needing 19 runs of the last 11 runs. Dhoni trusted Raina to bowl the last over with Knight Riders needing 6 runs off the last over. Raina bowled a tight over with 1 one run off the last ball to win the match and Saha hit the last ball over cover to score the winning run. Knight Riders won by 7 wickets!! They score their second win off the tournament and although it would not help them with tournament but would boost their confidence for IPL 2010.
