ICL Relents: Issues NOC to Players Print E-mail

It was round the corner, and finally the authorities have acquiesced. Indian Cricket League has given its consent to the players associated with it to voluntarily break their association if they so desire, and ICL would not come in their way. For the players who are at the threshold of their cricketing career, and who went to ICL to display their talent to the world, it indeed would be the sweetest news that they would have heard in the recent times.

Is it the recession effect that has forced the ICL authorities to take a decision to allow its players to forego the contract and allow them to play for any other team that they desire, apart from making themselves available for selection to their respective national teams.

ICL has been in a state of flux and was forced to postpone the tournament for the current year. Grapevine was agog with the rumour that it was done as the sponsorship in the desired quantum was not available. Besides, ICL had also been involved in unsavory controversy of not releasing the payments to the players.

This news would again be sweet music to the ears of the Board of Cricket Control in India aka BCCI as the threat to Indian Premier League is slowly on the verge of acceding defeat. Now having been able to control the situation on the home ground, it can go whole hog and challenge any other institution that is trying to float a parallel league, American Cricket League beware.

It does not however mean that the very genesis of the ICL was faulty. It had a noble intention in its formulation. With Kapil Dev at the helm of affairs it had the desire to unearth players from the corners of the country, hone their skills and also push them into the arena of competition. But holy notions also sometimes get caught in the cross fire if it has an element of rebel either written into it, or there is a perception about it turning into the same in the near future.

For country like New Zealand it would be a godsend opportunity, as one of their fastest bowlers Shane Bond can now play for the country. Shane Bond had joined the rebel league and was contemplating return to the mainstream cricket for quite some time.

It may also happen that Chennai Super Kings, which is looking for a good bowling option, may get a better bowler as there are good bowlers in the ICL still having quite a lot of cricket left in them.
