Mumbai Indians are out of the DLF IPL 2009 and for all practical purposes today’s match against Delhi Daredevils will be of academic interest only, because it is of no real consequence to either of the teams. However a win for Mumbai means that Sachin Tendulkar’s team will walk away from the tournament with some pride having won their last match. On the other hand a win for Delhi will mean that they regain some of their winning momentum that they lost against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
When Sachin’s men last took on Virender Sehwag’s Daredevils at East London on 8 May, Delhi won by 7 wickets. Both teams had made positive starts in the tournament however Mumbai soon seemed to lose the plot and after KKR were the first team to be out of the contention for a semi final berth. Mumbai’s much touted batting order which boasts Sanath Jayasuriya and Sachin Tendulkar to say nothing of others such as J P Duminy and Dwayne Bravo who have done very well for the team, have not however performed to potential. Even the bowlers are the sort that makes up the cream of international cricket, with Zaheer Khan Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh part of the team’s arsenal. The Delhi team on the other hand will be looking to regain their winning momentum that received a setback when Royal Challengers Bangalore managed to beat the top team of the tournament. And Virender Sehwag is probably acutely conscious of the fact that the runs have not exactly flowed from the blade of his bat, and he will need to get among the runs as his team progresses into the knock out stage of the tournament. They may be the top team in the tournament and the first to have made it decisively into the semi final but they can hardly afford to relax.Virender Sehwag had gone on record in the cricket news to say that his team could not afford to keep losing matches just before the semi final and that is precisely what his team has been guilty of doing. We will likely see a very determined Delhi team today eager to do their best and get back their winning ways; on the other hand if the Mumbai team rises to the occasion and plays to its potential it will be a real exciting clash on hand today!
