Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and MAK Pataudi were called upon to adjudicate on the Citi Under-23 Success of the DLF IPL 2009 Tournament and the three have reached a unanimous decision that it is Rohit Sharma who is deserving of this award. Having scored 333 runs at an average of over 27 runs, he has also taken 11 wickets which wins him a cash award of Rs. 10,00,000 (about 21,000 dollars).

The fact that Sharma was seen as deserving of this award by three former Indian cricket captains and successful players of international cricket is what makes this award special for him. “It is a great honour to be named the Citi Under 23 Success of the League. I’ve been pleased with my form in South Africa, it has been a fantastic competition and I have really enjoyed it. To be recognised for my achievements by three of the living legends of Indian cricket is a great thrill for me,” he said.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was also quoted in the cricket news speaking glowingly of the young player from the Deccan Chargers. “Rohit’s performances have helped light up the DLF IPL. He is without doubt one of the best young cricketers in the world, and he has a very exciting future with both Deccan Chargers and India. I congratulate him on becoming the Citi Under 23 Success of the League”, he said.

About his own abilities with the ball, Sharma said that he takes his bowling seriously though he is not a regular bowler and said that the hat-trick he took against the Mumbai Indians was an unexpected bonus. “I may not be bowling regularly, but I take my bowling seriously and am confident about it. But yes, the hat-trick was a surprise for me as well! I try and do my best with my bowling, whenever I am given the opportunity.”

Though the fact that the T20 World Cup will commence in England almost as soon as the IPL is over, is a bit of a worry for many in international cricket, Sharma who is also part of the national squad claims not to be worried about it. At this moment the youngster claims to be totally focused on the IPL and to him it does not matter that there will be practically no time for recouping between the IPL and the T20 World Cup.

N. Rajashekaran, Country Business Manager, Global Business Group, Citi India was quoted in the cricket news as saying, "At Citi, we take great pride in promoting young and upcoming talent and contributing towards their coaching, mentoring and training. The DLF IPL is an excellent springboard for young players to showcase their cricketing prowess. As an official partner of the DLF IPL, we are delighted to present the 'Citi U-23 Success of the League' award to Rohit Sharma who is truly deserving of the award. We hope that he will make both his country and his fans across the globe proud in the years to come."
