As the second season of the IPL draws to a close, as the whole world gears itself to watch the final between the Deccan Chargers and the Bangalore Royal Challengers tonight, we wondered what is it that makes the IPL tick? What is it that makes the World crazy about it? And the only plausible answer to this appears to be the speed, the intensity and the edge-of-the-seat-thriller qualities of the game. In fact the game is so fast-paced, that one mistake could cost you a win, and you’d never have enough time to make up for it.
It is this quality of the game, as Adam Gilchrist believes, that puts it at par with Test cricket in terms of pressure. "I think Twenty20 cricket applies more pressure on the players. It is at par with Test cricket simply because in T20s it is a real battle of wits as a batsman it is against the bowler and if you are a bowler then it is against the batsman," Gilchrist is quoted saying. “I think T20 cricket applies more psychological pressure and the players need to be tougher…Simply because there’s just no time. It’s like a staring competition… whoever blinks first, could pay the ultimate price. There’s no time to make up for lost ground in these games. Whereas in a Test match, you can make a mistake but you have got time,” he added It was his knock of 85 in 35 balls that brought the Deccan Chargers into the finals of the IPL, but Gilchrist is disappointed that he couldn’t that he could take it to a century: The Deccan Chargers have really been the ‘comeback kids’ this year, making it to the final from the bottom of the table last year. Gilchrist believes that “the players have got self-belief now,” and that is what got the team so far. His players were asked to put their heart to the game, and they responded well: “All I asked my players to do in this tournament was make whatever’s happening at the time the most important thing in your life at that time. When you are fielding, it’s the next delivery… make it the most important thing in your life at that moment, because there’s nothing else happening in your life at that moment.”
