Is the angst against the Board of Cricket Control in India, the reason for the outburst of the former Pakistani cricketers in relation to the chances of India being able to emerge as victorious once again in the second edition of the ICC T20 World Cup going to take Place in London in the month of June 2009? Zaheer Abbas and Wasim Akram are of the view that India is not amongst the favorites to win the T20 World Cup in London.
Zaheer Abbas and Wasim Akram do not, it seems, wish to acknowledge that India has indeed emerged as one of the potent forces in the T20 arena and could it have something to do with the fact that players from Pakistan did not play in the second edition of the Indian Premier League and also the fact that rights for organizing the World Cup of 2011 has been snatched away from Pakistan? These greats feel that the fatigue to the Indian players emanating out of the IPL in the second season could be the stumbling block and India may not be the champion this time around. But is there a substance in this argument? In tournaments of these kinds it always is a difficult proposition for a team, which is a winner in the first season to be able to successfully defend it once again. Let’s analyze it from the IPL perspective. The Indian opening player of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag had a rather lean season and they would be raring to go, the same being underlined by all the commentators commentating in the IPL in the second season. Now moving on to the bowling department the bowling would be spearheaded by RP Singh, who has been bestowed with the honor of being the most successful bowler in the IPL in the second season and the conditions of England during June would suit his bowling perfectly. Besides, the success that Rohit Sharma has found with the bat and the manner in which he has started experimenting with the bowl would elate the heart of any captain. Also the hard hitting that Suresh Raina did with the bat and the disguised bowler that he emerged in IPL, does it not enhance the confidence of any captain in his team about defending the title with panache. The comment of the Pakistani Cricketers therefore indeed is a far-fetched thought.
