From the time he hit the sick bay, the fortunes of Mumbai Indians took a nose dive in the Indian Premier League's second edition in South Africa as Zaheer Khan was spear-heading the pace attack, and particularly in the death situations of the match his bowling was literally unplayable. It seems that his injury would cast a shadow on the performance of the Indian team as well, as Zaheer Khan or Zaks as he is popularly called may not be match fit to be able to play in the T20 World Cup in England, which is going to start from 5 June 2009.
If there is one blot in career of Zaheer Khan, it is in terms of the lay-offs that he has to undergo on account of the injuries that he has suffered from time to time. The injury that he suffered on his bowling shoulder in the game against Royal Challengers in Johannesburg on May 3 has not yet healed and his absence has the potential to harm India's preparedness for the T20 World Cup. He was not able to play even a single match after this injury, it is otherwise a different issue that he emerged as the lucky mascot for the owner of Mumbai Indians Neeta Ambani, as he was found sitting to the left of her side in all the matches, though the Mumbai Indians might have won a match or lost it. Though the rest of the Mumbai Indians team has flown back home, Zaheer has decided to stay put in South Africa to facilitate him to recoup from his injury. According to a member of the Indian team support staff, Zaks recovery is on the expected lines and he should be in a position to play the first game against Bangladesh (at Trent Bridge on June 5). Indian fans would fervently be praying that he recovers fast to be a part of the squad. Incidentally the injury scare has become an issue for some teams in the IPL, more so in connection with the Ashes series coming up between England and Pakistan. The Australian team management must be grinning from ears to ears as their fast bowler Brett Lee has indeed hit the form at the right time and the bowling performance that he gave during the IPL matches would indeed be a matter of worry for the English team.
