There are two ways for a sport star or for that matter to be in the limelight. One is through your performance on the field and other is through creation of an element of controversy around your persona. Shoaib Akhtar falls in the second category; as a matter of fact he has become so much synonymous with controversy that it does not have an element of shock associated with it.
The latest addition in his crown has been his debarment from the ongoing National Twenty20 Championship by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Earlier PCB had him replaced in the Twenty20 World Cup squad because he was suffering from a skin infection. The controversy arose as Shoaib had taken the plea that he would not be able to attend the national camp for preparation of the World T20 Cup, but two days after PCB granted him the leave it found out that Shoaib had been named captain of the Islamabad Leopards. A PCB official, made it amply clear that the board had informed the Islamabad Cricket Association (ICA) that Shoaib would be violating his central contract if he played for them despite medical advice advising 10 to 12 days’ rest. His consent to be the captain of the Islamabad Leopards is indicative of the fact that he avoided being a part of the conditioning camp, which was taking place at high altitudes, and it was majorly a test to check out the physical endurance of the players. Where that to be so, as a representative of the gentleman's game he should have been magnanimous enough and not taken any new cricketing assignment. But he did not think twice before becoming the captain of the Islamabad Leopards. PCB is very well within his rights to inform the Islamabad Leopards that Shoaib has taken leave on account of skin infections and no skin infection in the world can be treated within two days that may allow a player to play a different tournament. As a matter of fact even during the inaugural season of the IPL in India, Shoaib had made the entry into the tournament with a bang but want out with a whimper owing to the injuries, which he was still nursing.
